what are the challenges and benifits of running a virtual machine?
The concept of a virtual machine is that it allows many different operating systems to run on the same hardware at the same time. For example you could have Windows 2000 installed on your personal computer and at the same time run copies of Windows XP, LINUX, DOS, as guest operating systems.
Benifits:
- Less hardware
- Allows for testing OS's
- No need to get compatible drivers - all hardware is virtualised
- No cross contamination
- Allow for legacy applications that require a special setup/OS
- Use expensive hardware to its full potential (run many servers on it)
- Easy to transfer 'virtual servers' from one server to another server
- VMWare allows for zero downtime for virtual servers, even when the hardware needs to go offline - just move to different hardware 'on the fly'! This feature is not free!!
- Not restricted to hardware manufacturers (Sun, IBM, Apple etc)
Challenges:
- Needs expensive hardware to run on production systems
- Ideally need a multi-CPU system
- OS support: MAC Server, Sun
- Costs involved: VMWare license, many MS licenses needed, perhaps some CAL's? Licensing is grey in some areas.
- Different vendors: VMWare, Microsoft and others
- In testing environments, doesn't really give a good indication of hardware compatibilites due to virtual drivers
Most of the challenges are probably minor - except for cost. In a production system, it will be expensive to setup, but in the long run, probably cheaper and easier to maintain.
