MBR or Master Boot Record is the initial program referred by Windows at startup. It is a small code located on first sector of hard disk, which communicates partition table information to boot the computer. Using this data, the Windows operating system loads from boot partition. If boot sector gets damaged, your system will fail to boot, thereby will make your partitions inaccessible. In order to restore these partitions, either use your backup or scan the drive using a Partition Recovery Software.
To illustrate, suppose you use a Windows based computer and when you try to boot the system, it prompts that boot sector has been modified or is damaged. You cannot boot into the system and cannot access the stored partitions and data.
Cause
Boot sector is damaged or overwritten by an application.
Solution
You should follow these steps to solve the existing issue:
· Insert the boot CD or DVD into the drive and boot your computer from it. For this, edit the BIOS settings to boot from CD and press any key when it prompts for
· Press 'R' to start Recovery Console
· Enter the administrator username and password to start Recovery Console command prompt
· Execute 'fixmbr' command. This will rewrite the boot record
· When the repair process is complete, exit the console and restart the computer
Try to reproduce the behavior. If the issue remains the same, you should format and reinstall Windows. To do so, boot the computer using installation media and access Recovery Console.
At times, when you reformat the drive and reinstall Windows, backup fails to restore required data as it is damaged or not updated. To cope up with these problems, you are recommended to use a Partition Recovery utility.
