Would a 6 core i7 980x 3.33ghz be better than a Xeon 5560 2.8ghz for 3d modeling and rendering?
Is Xeons more for Server based stuff? Or is it for workstation tasks such as 3dmodeling etc?
Simplest answer: The core i7 will be faster.
Xeons are great in server environments, but no better than an i7 for desktop use, including 3D.
The Xeon has the capability to use two physical packages on a motherboard, so, if you spent enough money you could have 2 xeons, (8 cores, 4 per package) on a single system. You could also have a motherboard that could use more physical memory slots. The Xeon also supports ECC memory, which is a way to detect and in many cases 'fix' a bad piece of memory. ECC memory is slower, and vastly more expensive than 'regular' memory.
Other than that all the specs are slower (Xeon 4 cores, 8M cache vs the i7 6 cores, 12M cache)
However, the i7 is cheaper. Many 3D packages these days can use the GPU (video card) to render, which since it is designed specifically for such things, renders much faster. So, by using the savings to upgrade the video card, you would get even more performance.
All in all, the i7 is the way to go.
Xeons are great in server environments, but no better than an i7 for desktop use, including 3D.
