My old Dell workstation has a PCI-x slot (62-bit/100mhz) what can I do with it?
Any idea where I could find cards for it? What can it do?
Is it worth getting a card for?
This is in a Dual Xeon CPU system.
PCI-X was developed jointly by IBM, HP, and Compaq as an extension to PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect). It was designed to:
* increase performance of high bandwidth devices such as Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel and Ultra3 SCSI cards
* allow processors to be interconnected in clusters

A PCI-X is just an extended form of PCI. You can read about PCI here:

The newer and more advanced form of PCI is the PCI-Express. It is faster and does not have the bottlenecks as seen with the PCI-x. If you are into serious gaming / development etc, then you can consider upgrading to PCIe (PCI Express). But you already have a dual xeon, and assuming you have decent ram, I would be surprised if you really need all that power.
