Hello. I have a 4 yr old computer with Windows XP Home Ed. My son was in the middle of installing the 'service pack 2' update when the computer started to reboot. When I attempt to use safe mode or last known good configuration, it just reboots. Besides pulling the hard drive and connecting it to another pc, copy the data then wipe it clean, are there any other options using the DOS Command ? Thanks for your help. Have a good day. Jim
your computer serves you best in 4 yrs, but when it was given an xp sp2 upgrade, the "nonstop(?)" rebooting begun..
there might be a little shock on your computer..check the following:
*the power supply (box) at least 500w
*the memory stick (took it off and wipe the pins clean, use an eraser to do it)
*kindly get rid the dust on your motherboard to avoid corrosion (a clean, dry paint brush will do).
in using DOS Command, use a win98 startup disk..this will only serve you to open pc in DOS. at least, you could do the wiping out of your hd to assure a clean disk to install the xp2. There you can also perform some task like scandisk, do it before installing OS to assure you of correcting your harddisk to any error (if there is) before proceeding installation.
you can format it the old way through DOS, but the partition could only be done in FAT32. no problem, you can convert it when you install the XP2 from FAT32 to NTFS (installation is self-explanatory..you will never be misled).
but be cautious: the usual problem of constant rebooting is the memory...it happens with my other pc. it was inserted 3 sticks and one of them has bad chips that contributing to its continuous reboot (not even reachind the desktop) but when i took off one of the memory the pc is now running good.
but when it reboot you twice, and on the next it will just hang u up..or not opening at all just a blinking monitor--the power supply might be the problem (could be the power cord or the power box that is not supplying right amount of current)
