Is there a maximum soft/hardware configuration to Windows XP?
I'm thinking about building my own clone desktop suited toward higher end gaming. I own a laptop loaded with Vista, and while I don't hate the OS, I also don't love it. I would really love to load my clone with XP Pro.
Does XP have any problems with recognizing more modern concepts like PCIe or Crossfire or Direct X 10 or anything else a higher end gaming rig would come across? Maybe it will have trouble recognizing quadcore processors.
I'm only asking because I'm old school. I seem to remember Windows 98 having problems recognizing most processors beyond a gigahertz or ram beyond a gigabyte. Then again that was 10 years ago so maybe my memory is fuzzy.
While XP reconizes Crossfire, SLI, PCIe, all processors and ram; it does not work with Direct X 10. It still uses Direct X 9.
Other thoughts
Windows XP 32 can hold up to 4 gigs of ram. Even though some of the 4 gigs is used by other devises so it will show less. about 3.25
64 bit can hold up to 128 gigs
Both windows XP and Vista do not fully use multi core processors to their full capabilities. This is something MS is working on in windows 7.
