How do i defragment my computer and how to check disk/ f on my windows xp compuerter?
i was trying to defragment my computer and when i tryed it said to check disk/ f. I have a windows XP computer so can you help me out.
chkdsk checks the disk structure for consistency and, if the /f parameter is supplied, tries to fix inconsistencies. Try this to run chkdsk /f:
1.Open Windows Explorer (My Computer in XP or Computer in Vista).
2.Right-click on the disk you want to check.
3.Select Properties.
4.Click the Tools tab.
5.Under Error Checking, click Check Now.
6.Make sure Automatically fix file system errors is checked.
7.Click Start.
8.You may see a dialog box saying the drive is mounted and asking you if you should try to dismount it. Click Yes.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Running chkdsk on C: is a little trickier, because it can’t fix anything while the operating system is running. It has to be run BEFORE the operating system starts up. When you click Start for the C drive, you’ll see a dialog box telling you it can't run and asking if it should schedule a run on the next reboot. Click yes, then logout and restart your machine.
Don't expect to be able to read the results. When it finishes, it continues with the boot in about five seconds.
