Home wireless networks were merely protected until the recent times. The only option for the Wi-Fi users is to opt for WEP (wired equivalent policy). Though all the wireless routes and accessories for home use supported the WEP capabilities, mostly this is being turned off by default by the manufactures. Hence they were not being protected from intruders. At times they even failed. Now there is good news for the home network users that a new security system is introduced called Wi-Fi Protected Access (WAP) for securities.
Now Windows XP Service Pack 1 together with home edition, Windows XP professional, a media centre edition with download update are provided to the home user to configure potential security for their network. Hence you don't need to consult a network professional to lay down your wireless security.
WPA resolves the initialization vectors and provides integrity of the messages passing through MIC or Message integrity check, with the help of TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) to boost up encryption. This is a special enterprise authentication server which provides good and potential encryption security.
To change WEP to WPA there are many options available in the market. Windows XP users can connect the network by clicking on the network notification area icon on the right hand corner of the window. By clicking the "connect to a network", it will open up a wizard shown up with the wireless router and SSID default. A message "Security Enabled Network" may appear on it. You have to select the wireless by clicking the "connect" option.
The box will prompt you to login credentials. The user should configure the appropriate encryption type to match the router. Then Passphrase, which is done by inputting the 8 digit characters, is set up with router configuration and the key. Now, the network will function with WPA protection. You may need a manual set up, in case SSID is hidden and you have to input the router information.
