Why? because they can run for YEARS without any maintenance and down time. Also Linux is a FREE OS with very few versions that you have to pay for. When you do buy a Linux OS (mostly server versions) they cost a fraction of the price compared to WIndows (around $80 - $100 with windows coming in at about $1000)
