My tech guy said to remove my current 2GB RAM and replace it with the 4GB of new RAM. He said it would perform better. Since I have 4 slots it seems to me that it would be better to have 6GB total – even if it was not at peak performance? What do you think?

I am working on large Photoshop files.
I think you will be ok with all 6 gigs since they are the same manufacturer and the same DDR2 RAM speed. I would first suggest that you take the old ram out and install the new RAM, usually dual channel is positioned in slots 1 & 3, leaving slots 2 & 4 empty. Boot the computer and make sure you are ok with the new RAM. Then shut down and install your older RAM in slots 2 & 4. Reboot. If you are ok, then you are OK! LOL
If not, then something is going on, but I do think you are just fine so long as your motherboard supports 2 gig modules and more than 4 gigs of total RAM.
