At a time when everyone is talking about vista, the users who can't or don't want to invest in a new operating system are feeling left out. So here I bring some tips to keep your XP rolling along for years to come.
- Get off the upgrade bandwagon: You need to take care that you don't constantly upgrade to the latest versions of your favorite applications without upgrading your hardware, else, your PC will soon be creakier than ever. So try sticking to the version that gels well with your hardware.
- Don't swap between processes unnecessarily: A part of your hard disk space is used as virtual memory by your windows so as to supplement RAM. Generally the OS sets aside some virtual memory space to all processes, so the virtual memory gets used by itself even if some RAM is still available.
- Check the System Restore priorities: System Restore has saved my bacon many times, so I always ensure that enough space has been allocated for restore points.
- Keep cutting the extra flab: The Windows' Disk Cleaner tool helps you to cleanup the junk you don't want anymore, save the internet cache.
- Change to NTFS flow: If you are still hanging onto your FAT32 hard-disk format, then it's time to switch to NTFS (unless you are still using Windows 98). NTFS gives you the option of accessing encryption, folder and disk compression, and other superior features.
- Stop using hibernation: Every time you use the hibernation feature so as to startup faster, the OS puts everything in the RAM. The size of the file is usually same as that of the RAM. So if you don't have much space in the windows drive then don't use hibernation feature.
- Change the application priority: If the application you're working slows down to the speed of a tortoise due a less important process running in the background then try changing its priority in the task manager, this allocates more resources to the program you are running.
