great question! I've been planning on doing this myself since I saw the How-to link listed below. There are a lot of steps. If you are technically competent, then you should be able to do it. First thing, though is to make sure that your BIOS supports booting from USB. If your motherboard is more than 3 years old, it may not support USB booting.
Simple check: Go into the BIOS and look at the Boot Order and Boot Devices. If USB is a choice, then can proceed to make a bootable WinXP install USB flash-drive.
Summary: You will be formatting the USB drive using a downloaded utility. My scanner did not find any malware in the download; you should double-check it. And you will also need your WinXP CD to copy the files from.
