Typing Unicode in Windows Vista Home.?
I want a way to type unicode directly in windows, such that it will even work with notepad.
I tried alt + code, it doesn't work at all.
Can i type unicode as quickly as typing other languages, is there a universal ime for it?
alt x only works in wordpad and word, so it won't do.
The Alt-Key method works fine on my Vista machine and every other Windows machine I have owned or used. But it is not intended for Unicode characters per se. Rather it allows you to enter the code number for each of the 256 characters in your current DOS 8-bit character set and your current Windows 8-bit character set and so produce them.
By sure that Num Lock on the numeric keypad is set on. Then hold down the left-Alt key, and type the decimal number of the character on the numeric keypad while continuing to press the Alt key. Then release the Alt key.
If you type a number without a leading zero, the corresponding character in your current DOS character set is generated. If you type a number preceded by a leading zero, the corresponding character in your current Window 8-bit character set is generated.
If you type a number greater than 255, the value wraps. That is, typing 256 will produce the same character as typing 0, typing 257 will produce the same character as typing 1, typing 258 will produce the same character as typing 2, and so forth.
This method was part of DOS and Windows long before Unicode was even thought of.
When using Microsoft Office, and some other Microsoft programs, the Alt key will allow you to enter higher numbers and the higher numbers produce the characters associated with that decimal number in Unicode. This method also works in Wordpad, but not in Notepad.
The free Quick Unicode Input Tool allows you to input all base plane Unicode characters by typing their number along with the Alt key in decimal or hex with any program. See http://www.cardbox.com/quick.htm .This works in any Windows program. I suggest you download and install it.
Another common method to access special characters is to switch keyboards. That is, you install more than one virtual keyboard for the languages you want to type and switch between them.
Or you can create your own virtual keyboard with the characters you use often. Use the free Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=8BE579AA-780D-4253-9E0A-E17E51DB2223&displaylang=en . There are other Keyboard Layout Creators from other companies which cost, but which do more. See http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/utilities_fonts.html for keyboard layout utilities among other utilities for accessing non-standard characters.
See http://ipa4linguists.pbworks.com/ which is a website intended to show how to enter phonetic characters, but the methods work just as well for other Unicode characters.
Currently Unicode contains 107,296 characters which is far, far more than any keyboard can handle by direct typing. But the utilities described above, most of which can be used in conjunction with one another, provide various ways of accessing the characters.
Personally, I tend to use the free AllChars.exe utility from http://allchars.zwolnet.com/ which only allows access to the full 8-bit Windows character set. But that includes most of the characters that I most often use.
