Blues is freestyle jamming. There are not very many pieces of sheet music to buy, and there are really no real rules to follow. This is why classical players have a hard time getting the groove. Here is a simple formula on how to play blues piano. The secret is in the left hand.
Oh no, say the majority of the people because they are right handed. This is only because most piano instructors teach you to perform by notes. And to top it off you have to produce it exactly the way it is written and creativity is thrown out the window. So you learn to chord with your left hand and produce melody with the right. Or you learn to chord and arpeggios with both hands to accompany a vocalist. Any other form is greatly discouraged.
Formal training can be a block in the mind of a musician when you are required to think out of the box. Making both hands work in moving patterns at the same time is a little unorthodox, therefore considered taboo. This simplified formula will help to coordinate both hands in a particular fashion.
Create an arpeggio beginning on C2 with your fifth finger. C2 is the second C from the left on the keyboard. Place your third finger on G and your first or thumb on B flat. Don't forget arpeggios are not chords so the three notes are not played together.
Now produce the arpeggio starting with the first finger so you are doing what is called a walk down. So the last note of the arpeggio will be C. Practice until it is easy to do without looking at it. When you have learned to walk this bass line well, you are ready to add something on the right hand.
For just a minute stay with the left hand and learn this series of chords in this order: C minor, E flat major, F, G flat minor, G major and B flat major. Practice until they are like butter to play. Now learn the same progression on the right hand. When you can perform this series quickly and smoothly on both hands, you are ready to progress to the next level. Blues players call this progression a one, flat three, flat five, flat seven and an eight or a one.
Minor scales are the key in this genre of music. Create a C minor scale, now add a G flat between the F and G. Skip the A, play the B flat and the octave C. You now have a blues C minor scale. It is a slightly different mode than a normal minor scale. Here is a nice little ditty or lead lick using this modified scale. Play C, D sharp, F, F sharp, and G. Do it forward and back until it flows easily.
Both hands are now prudent to move forward. First create the chords with the left hand and the lead line with the right. Then produce the arpeggio with the left and the chords with the right. Put them together and practice until there is no gap between the switch. Once you can do this easily you are well on your way to being a blues pianist. Now the best is yet to come. Play the arpeggios with the left while you play the lead lick on the right hand. Put all three together and you have got a great little blues song.
