Almost everyone has experienced the frustration of a computer crash. Nothing compares to the sinking feeling in your stomach when you realize that all of your work documents, photos and videos are gone for good.
Despite the fact that so many people have lived through a major crash, a lot of us still don't take the time to back up our important files. Why is this the case? There's no good answer for that question. Perhaps it's because we're lazy. Maybe we all take a "that would never happen to me" attitude (or a "lightning never strikes the same place twice" attitude, for those who've had it happen before).
The fact is that it's not difficult to back up your key files. It takes only a few minutes a week. Here are a few quick and easy ways you can do it:
1. Create a hard drive partition. Partitioning a hard drive is like cutting an apple into halves. Each partition is a separate area for data storage. Many people use one partition for their operating system files (Windows files, for most people) and the other for their personal files (work documents, photos, etc.). If your Windows crashes and you need to reinstall it, you don't need to worry about losing any of your personal files.
2. Burn to disc. Partitioning a hard drive is too complicated for many casual computer users. Most people, however, know how to burn a CD or DVD. Backing up your files on disc is a safe way to ensure that your most important files aren't lost in a crash. Regular CDs hold about 700 MB of data, while DVDs hold 4.7 GB (or about 6.5 times as much as a CD). Remember to burn the disk as data, not as music.
3. Use an external hard drive. This method is even more secure than creating a partition on your internal hard drive because it protects you in the event that your internal hard drive becomes corrupted. An external hard drive is like a partition, except it can be removed at any time. If your internal hard drive breaks, you can simply detach your external hard drive and attach it to a functioning computer. External hard drives typically hold anywhere from 100 GB to over 1 TB (1,000 GB) of data.
4. Use a USB flash drive. Flash drives are, essentially, the same thing external hard drives. However, they are usually smaller (some fit on a keychain), can store less data and they don't require a power source. Instead, they connect to any computer via the USB port and they are ready to go. If you don't have too many files to back up, a USB flash drive is a great option.
Try to get in the habit of backing up your files. Then, when your computer crashes (it's going to happen at some point), you won't have to experience the aggravation of losing everything.
