New technology always comes with many questions; same is the case with DVDR. There are so many options available in the market so many times a new user feels confused. The selection between DVDR and CDR depends upon the volume of recordable data as DVDR has more capacity than CDR. The life depends upon the way you handle and store DVDR. Now the focus shifts upon various options of DVDR.
DVDR is made by two 0.6 mm polycarbonate discs which are bonded to each other with super adhesive. The first disc coated with gold reflector or silver alloy has a recording dye and contains laser guiding groove. The other disc is a "dummy" un-grooved disc to add mechanical stability and to make DVDR 1.2 mm thick as per universal standard. Single sided DVDR has a storage capacity of 4.71 GB while the double sided DVDR has storing capacity about 8.75GB. Today, 4.7GB (single layer/single sided), 9.4GB (single layer/ double sided), 8.5GB (dual layer/single sided) and 17.1GB (dual layer/ double sided) DVDR are available in the market. Recording devices to burn dual layer DVD are easily available but still not in common use. Minus (-) and plus (+) signs associated with DVDR indicate different methods of formatting and accessing the recorded data. DVDRW can be reused again after deleting the recorded files.
DVDs are resistant to dust, smudges, fingerprints and scratches. However, surface scratches and contaminants may cause data error. Handle your DVDR only by the outer side edge and don't touch the shiny surface. Never try to play a cracked DVDR. Store your DVDRs away from heaters, hot surfaces, radiators and direct sunlight. DVDR must be stored at -20 to 50 degree Celcius temperature. The relative humidity must be between 5 - 90 %, though recently introduced Taiyo Yuden Watershield DVDRs by Riverproaudio take care of this aspect effectively. It is a myth that even the light magnetic field created by speakers may affect the working of DVDR. For cleaning the DVDR, use of compressed air is not advised but instead you may use mild soapy water.
