What are the step-by-step directions on how to install Windows XP on a Made-for-Vista Computer?
I have Windows Vista, my old computer had Windows XP, but it crashed, so I bought a Gateway Latop. How can I install Windows XP using Home Edition, and a new XP disc?
BTW, where can I get the drives and everything.
You can go to the website of the manufacturer of your computer and hope that they offer Windows XP compatible drivers for your computer.
Please, make sure you do the following before you proceed.
(1) Determine whether you have 'restore' CDs that can completely restore your computer to its original factory settings OR your computer has a 'hidden' partition that provides this function.
Make sure you've done whatever is necessary to ensure that you can restore you computer if you need to do so.
(2) Acquire all the appropriate Windows XP compatible drivers and burn them to recordable CD or store them on a USB flash drive.
(3) Download the Windows XP Service Pack 2 and/or Service Pack 3 (whichever you prefer) and save it to removable media.

(4) Determine what protective software you want to use to protect your computer from the dastardly villains on the Internet, download the installers for that software, and save them to removable media.

(5) If stripping your computer of Windows Vista is also going to eradicate all the bundled software that came with the computer, you will need some 'productivity' software for those instances when you need to be 'productive'.

(6) You may want to use non-Microsoft tools on the Web, like Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird, and/or Seamonkey. Download the installers for the programs that you think you may want, and save them to removable media.

Now all you need to do is set your computer's BIOS to boot from the CD drive, pop the Windows XP installation CD into the CD drive, and reboot.
Watch closely, because you need to pay attention during the first minute of the boot process to make sure that you 'press any key to boot from the CD . . . '
Evenutally, the Windows XP Installation Wizard will get to a point where it will ask you where you want to install Windows XP. If you have followed the advice in item #1, you can safely repartition the hard drive as you please, then choose which partition you wish Windows XP to reside on.
From that point, it's really just a matter of reading 8th grade level English information and prompts.
When the installation of Windows XP is completed on your computer (if your copy of Windows XP has SP2 integrated into it), you may decide to upgrade it to SP3 with the installer that you downloaded in item #3.
After that, you should install drivers, protective software, and any other software that you have elected to install — before you ever connect your computer to the Internet.
