Old-fashioned girls' names: this, this, this, or that?
Some are more common, others are not. Just a mix of old-fashioned girls' names. I made it a "this, this, this, or that" to give people more options.
INSTRUCTIONS:
The instructions are simple, really. All you have to do is choose ONE (no more, no less) from each group.
1.) Marcella, Marjorie, Mildred, or Martha?
2.) Pearl, Mabel, Lucille, or Opal?
3.) Hilda, Harriet, Hester, or Helen?
4.) Wilhelmina, Ophelia, Philomena, or Henrietta?
5.) Bernadette, Genevieve, Antoinette, or Constance?
6.) Bonnie, Sally, Betty, or Nellie?
7.) Minerva, Cleo, Rosemary, or Florence?
8.) Fern, Faye, Nell, or Joyce?
9.) Carol, Lenore, Yvonne, or Phoebe?
10.) Maureen, Pauline, Justine, or Aileen?
11.) Camille, Audrey, Marie, or Louise?
12.) Agnes, Eunice, Gladys, or Gertrude?
13.) Matilda, Cecelia, Cornelia, or Rosalind?
Thanks for answering, and have fun!
1. Marcella- Of the four, I only like Marcella and Mildred. Marcella ultimately won because I think it suits all ages better than Mildred. I can see a small child and an adult named Mildred, but for some reason, I don't see it suiting a teen well, I do like the nickname Millie though. Marcella seems more youthful and grown-up at the same time, Marcie is an adorable nickname as well.
2. Mabel- This one is on my list as Mabel Elisabeth, but I have also begun to consider Mabel Harriet. I think it is a charming name that makes me think of a homemaker, a wonderful one, at that. I tend to like short, sweet names, that are not nicknames as names. Pearl and Opal are pretty names, but they sound a tad bit cheesy to me, like the equivalent to today's Charity and Promise. I am slightly fond of Opal anyway though. Lucille is a beautiful name, but I do prefer just Lucy, however with Lucille, you also have the nickname option of Cilla, that is nice.
3. Harriet- I like Harriet and Helen, but I prefer Harriet because it makes me think of a good person, someone that gives back, and loves unconditionally. I also adore the nickname "Ettie". Helen is a beautiful name, but I just doesn't carry as much meaning, in my eyes, though I am unsure why. Hilda reminds me of a witch with an ugly mole on her face, I cannot get that out of mind when I hear the name; meeting a person named Hilda may help that though. Hester just makes me think of a male instead of a female, I think it is due to the "-er" ending, but that may not be why, I do much prefer Esther, which is where Hester comes from.
4. Ophelia- I am not a huge fan of any of those names, because I am not typically attracted to long, "over-the-top" name, with a few exceptions. I also am not usually into male names that have been feminized simply by adding a few letters, meaning Henrietta and Philomena are out. It also taking Wilhelmina out of the equation as well, if you want to get technical, but for some reason, it does not remind me of such names, I do not like it because it never seems to sound right when I say it, for some reason. Ophelia is a lovely, classic name that doesn't seem to "over-the-top", it also offers the nickname Ellie, which is cute.
5. Genevieve- This name and Guinevere are a couple of the exceptions noted above. I think it is a beautiful name that reminds me of a ballerina and I could see someone in all walks of life with this name, it is simply lovely. Genny and Evie are both wonderful nicknames, but I am not sure I would even use one. Antoinette and Bernadette are also very pretty names, but they just aren't names I would go for, they are somewhat overly "flowy". I just do not like Constance, at all, it always reminds of of a sour, old, cat lady, for some reason, though Connie is an okay nickname.
6. Nellie- It is a sweet name that I can see someone of all ages having. Bonnie is also a sweet name, but I just much prefer the "feel" and sound of Nellie. Sally always reminds me of "Mustang Sally", I cannot get pasted that association. Betty is my grandmother's name, but my sister also named her car "Little Red Betty", so there is another car reference I cannot shake.
7. Cleo- Short and sweet, just like I like them
I think it is a gorgeous name, and it is a less common alternative to Chloe, which is also beautiful. Rosemary is a pretty name, but I much prefer just Rose, I love seeing Rose as a first name. Rosemary reminds me of plants and dogs, I'm not sure why it reminds me of dogs. Florence is another one of those name that I just don't like, all I picture is florid and floss, so it basically reminds me of dental health essentials.
8. Joyce- I adore the nickname Joy, plus, Joyce is one of the "softest" names I have ever heard, and I tend to like "soft" names. I am a big fan of Joyce Meyer, as well, so that doesn't hurt my attraction to the name. Faye is also nice, but it seems boring to me, and I think it looks a little strange written out. Fern will always make me think of the plant, and only the plant. Nell is a nice name, but it is too close to Neel, in my opinion, and seens to be missing something.
9. Carol- The names makes me think of Christmas, family, and warmth. It is a beautiful name and another one of those "soft" names I referenced to above. Carol just seems to contain everything lovely and pure, all in five letters, now that is talent
I also like Yvonne, but I tend to stick it in more of a middle name position. Lenore doesn't seem very feminine too me, though I do like Leona, which directly violates the rule I hinted at in number four, but there are always exceptions. Phoebe is one of those names I have despised since the first time I heard it, Phoebe and Kylie are the only two names like that for me, that I can think of anyway. I am beginning to warm up to Phoebe though, so it may be taken off there soon. Penelope and Evangeline are both names I have recently taken off that list.
1O. Pauline- Again, this is a violation of number four, but I like Pauline, basically because it was my great-grandmother's name. I actually prefer Paulina, with the nickname Lina. I always told myself I would have two daughters name Paulina and Virginia after my great-grandmothers. Maureen and Justine are lacking that feminine feel, in my eyes, anyway. Justine is too much like Justin, and I do not know what it is about Maureen. I do like Aileen though, it is a lovely name, one I haven't looked into much.
11. Louise- I have always adored this name. While Louise also violates number four, i think it has made a big enough name for itself to be taken out of that category. Louise does take the backseat to Louisa and Eloise, in my book, though. Camille, Audrey, and Marie are all three beautiful names as well. I used to despise Audrey and Marie, but I have warmed up to them quite a bit here lately. I have always loved Camille though, it is so "soft" and gorgeous, it also has the adorable nickname Cami for small children.
12. Gertrude- I am not a fan of any of them, simply because they all sound so, unfeminine to me. Agnes reminds me of angus beef, which reminds me of men with large appetites. Eunice is actually a nice name, but far too resemblant of Eugene, for my taste. Gladys is just "one of those names", if you know what I mean. Gertrude seems to be the lesser of evils, it is slightly feminine sounding and does have the adorable nickname Trudie.
13. Matilda- This one was rather difficult to decide, as I like all of them besides Cornelia. Matilda is so spunky, as is the nickname Tilly. Spunk is the only thing it has over the oh do beautiful and magnificent Cecelia and Rosalind. The name are do feminine and ultra gorgeous. Cecilia and Rosalind make me think regal, while Matilda is more "common folk", I like that. Cornelia just hard and an awful lot like Cornelius.
