Set your shooting mode first to remote. One way of doing that is to press the "i" button (I think that is also the zoom out button?) and then scroll down to the shooting mode then click ok. You should see a list of icons, just highlight the remote icon and press ok.
NOTE:
The delay of the receiver in the camera is timed to save battery power. You can set your camera to wait for IR signals from the remote at a maximum of 15mins.
