I bought a Dell re-ferb for my daughter, It has windows XP Pro for referbished computers. Can I install it in ?
My computer that has xp-home?
My computer is not refurbished. It is a dell dimension 3000.
What is the difference in the two programs?

I assumed I could just attempt to install it and it would just update my home to pro.
The differences between Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home are fairly negligible, though XP Professional has more robust networking options, Remote Assistance (for helping other XP users fix their computers remotely), and a better data backup tool. If you're happy with XP Home, there aren't many compelling reasons to even try upgrading to Professional. However, even if you try to do so, it may not work.
You mentioned that both computers are made by Dell. What I have found with Dell's Windows XP disks is that if you try to install one on a different computer, the installation process will halt because it is not being installed on the original system. Most likely, the Dell version of Windows XP has a way of checking the serial number or other information from the system's motherboard. In any case, it is very likely that the installation routine itself will block you from installing XP Professional on your own computer. And even if you are able to complete the installation, you may have another problem: product activation.
When Microsoft designed Windows XP, they incorporated technology which locks the product key of Windows to the system on which it was installed. XP transfers information about your computer to Microsoft so that a record of its hardware configuration can be stored on the activation server. So if after a copy of Windows is reinstalled, the product key associated with that copy is all of a sudden associated with a different hardware configuration than what was originally sent to Microsoft, the activation request will be denied, and you won't be able to use Windows XP for more than 30 days on that system until you purchase another license. This was designed to foil the fact that Windows 95/98/ME could be installed on as many computers as a person wanted without Microsoft being able to stop it (i.e. to force people to buy more licenses and thus make more money).
The only thing you can do is to try installing XP Professional on your home computer and see what happens, though I doubt the benefits will really be worth it. Whether or not it works really depends on how Dell's installation CD was programmed and whether or not the same product activation features found in retail copies of XP are present. I strongly doubt you will be successful, but I could be wrong.
