Do you get an error telling you that you're Windows boot.ini system file is corrupt? If that's the case, Windows will not boot. But don't reformat your computer just yet. Luckily, it is very easy to recover from this error without any data loss. The boot.ini file contains instructions that are required by Windows to startup the system. To recover from this, we will need the Windows Recovery CD, or Windows Installation CD.
After you have found this CD and cleared off the dust, startup your computer so are able to insert CD's. Insert the CD in your computer and then power it down. Start it up again and go into the recovery console by pressing a key when asked for. The next step is to rebuild the file, in order to fix the corrupt boot.ini.
This can easily be done by entering the command 'bootcfg /rboot'. When asked to enter the 'Load Indentifier', just enter something random as this is just a label. If 'bootcfg' asks for 'OS Load Options', enter '/fastdetect'. Your patients will be proved during this process. Windows needs to check your hardware and then it will rebuild the corrupt boot.ini file according to the hardware data collected. The 'bootcfg' command allows you to set a variety of boot options, but this is the most important one.
Preventing the boot.ini to become corrupted is easier than having it rebuild every time it is messed up. The file often becomes corrupted, due to changed hardware profiles or software that are poorly written. Even software with malicious intent can corrupt this file as it is not locked by Windows.
A good registry cleaner can prevent a lot of this trouble!
