I understand Macromedia was purchased by Adobe in 2005, not sure what the components are called now. Basically I'm after good open source or freeware professional software that has as functions close to the Macromedia suite. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Nope, those programs are pretty much professional stuff and so far few open source software have gotten close.
GIMP is your best bet in coming close to Photoshop.
There's bazillion HTML/CSS editors out there, none close to power of Dreamweaver.
Nothing out there close to Fireworks in capability in a package. There are separate splicers, optimizers, paint, and so on, but none together.
