if autoexec.bat is not important in windows xp, why my pc isn't booting now??
well.. i think i had deleted autoexec.bat... i thought it was a virus or something else... (because of winwkh.exe)
so.... since i had deleted autoexec.bat, my notebook doesn't start windows xp... it just launch the splash screen of compaq (notebook's fabricator) and then, it reboot automatically... (splash screen again)then reboot (splash screen once again), and then reboot... so.... always is rebooting!!
wht i have to do? :S or how do i can install the autoexec.exe.. or in another way, if isn't autoexec.exe, what file do you think i have deleted??
PD: i have windows xp pro SP2
question for Gerry R.... if i do what u say... files aren't going to be deleted, right??
First of all it's autoexec.BAT not autoexec.exe. This is almost always an empty text file on the root folder. It is only there for compatibility with older DOS applications that may run on your machine from time to time. XP doesn't use it during the boot. When you get the machine running again, you can use notepad to make a new autoexec.bat. It's just an empty text file given that name.
Now, let's try to figure out what you may have deleted: The main files XP needs on the root to be able to boot are boot.ini, ntldr, ntdetect.com and pagefile.sys. Other files which may be there for compatibility are io.sys, msdos.sys and config.sys. If you deleted any of the first 4, you will have to restore your boot files, using the Windows XP setup CD.
How to restore the boot files with the XP CD:
Insert the CD and boot your machine with it. (You may have to press a key to signal you want to boot from the CD, otherwise the machine will boot from the hard disk again.)
Let the setup begin.
When the message appears on the screen, press R to enter the recovery console.
When you reach the command prompt, type the following:
bootcfg /rebuild (then press Enter)
The bootcfg utility will scan your hard drives for any Windows XP installations and then display the results. Follow the remaining steps to add your Windows XP installation to the boot.ini file.
The first prompt asks Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All).
Type Y in response to this question and press Enter.
The next prompt asks you to Enter Load Identifier:.
This is the name of the operating system. For example, type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition and press Enter.
The final prompt asks you to Enter OS Load options:.
Type /Fastdetect here and press Enter.
Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.
Assuming that a missing or corrupt boot.ini file was your only issue, Windows XP should now start normally.
If the bootcfg utility finds other errors, just follow the prompts to restore whatever it thinks is missing.
