I have been learning how to play an acoustic guitar for the past few months, but I would like to play an electric guitar too.
I know there are quite a few popular brands. I was looking into getting a squire, but I was wondering if you had a warm spot in your heart for any particular brand, just so i keep my options open.
Since it is my first, it doesn't need to be fancy, but I want it to last through my daily hours of practice:)
and this might be a little random, but im going to college next year, and I want to make sure I can still play consistently, but I'm not sure I would feel comfortable bringing my guitar to my dorm.
Should I invest in a cheap one just to bring with me to college?
just a thought... thnx for your answers!!<333
Also, how much should i spend on an amp?
You can't really go wrong with a Squier. They're solidly built, sound pretty much identical to their pricey Fender cousins, and they're very comfortable to play, with fairly light bodies and thin necks. I know some guitarists who started out playing Squiers, figuring they'd upgrade to Fenders when they had more money, but who never bothered upgrading because the Squiers more than met their needs. And my brother, who owns a recording studio and loads of high-end guitars, still uses the Squier Telecaster he bought more than 20 years ago as his backup guitar when he plays live, since it's as reliable as anything he's owned.
If you're not going to be playing clubs, a 10- or 15-watt practice amp should serve you well. The ones sold in guitar value packages often sell for less than $30 on eBay. Pawn shops are also a great place to buy amps, since musicians are always selling off gear to pay rent. Most of the small amps also have headphone jacks, which will come in handy when you're at college. And if you're inclined, you can get a Squier Stratocaster package that contains both the guitar and the amp for around $200. Here's a link:
As for taking you guitar to school, that can be risky. I'd recommend getting a case with a lock, since theft isn't the only concern. I was horrified when I returned home from class one day and walked in on my roommates jumping around on the furniture using my Fender Music Master bass as a prop while they posed for pictures. On the up side, I was glad that I'd left my good bass at home. At least the Music Master was pretty junky, which is why I bought it to take to school.
