It's important to be first. We typically remember who won the Super Bowl, but rarely do we remember who lost. Take the Olympics, many people will remember the gold medal winner for an event, but typically forget who won the silver or bronze. This is especially true for marketing. Your marketing efforts should place your medical practice first in the minds of your target audience, whether your marketing is targeting patients or referral sources.
Studies show that it takes 5 to 7 marketing exposures to create initial brand awareness. What this means is that you have to hit your target audience with 5 to 7 messages before they realize that your medical practice exists, let alone think about you when they need the type of services you provide. So, if you're not as well established as your competitors, how do you become first in the minds of prospective patients and referral sources? This is especially difficult when well-established competitors have already built significant brand name recognition. The key is to carve a niche.
Here's an example of carving a niche in marketing: toothpaste. I've worked with many dentists in my career and most dentists will tell you that there is not that much difference amongst toothpastes in their effectiveness. So take the top brand of toothpaste in the US: Crest. They've built a brand by being known as the "go-to" toothpaste for fighting cavities. If you're going to compete with Crest using your brand of toothpaste, knowing that your toothpaste fights cavities just as well as Crest, you probably won't be too successful. Crest has long established themselves as the brand best at fighting cavities. They're first in people's minds.
So what was the strategy for Ultrabrite? They're known as the toothpaste for whiter teeth. Close-up is the brand known for fresh breath. Once again, most dentists would agree that there is little difference between each brand's effectiveness. It's all about branding yourself within a specific niche.
So what's your medical practice's brand? Have you carved a niche? How are you different than your competitors? Do you have more experience or better credentials? Do you have leading-edge technology or do you provide a better patient experience through outstanding service? To be first in mind, I recommend carving out a niche, so that your target audience knows specifically what your strengths are and why they should choose you. This will help build your brand more effectively and be "first in mind".
