MAC Question: Can I read a PC formatted external HD?
I am considering getting a MAC !
I have lots of files (pictures and music) on an external HD I use with my WindowsXP machine.
Question: Can I read this with MAC (The HD has both USP and firewire) or does the hard drive need to be reformatted with a different file system?
If the answer is no (natively) are there any MAC utilities that will allow me to read the drive (so I can copy the files to MAC , fix the drive file system, dump files back to the HD...
Last question: would I be able to have 2 partitions on the HD if the windows file system is incompatible?

You can read and write to a HD that was formatted with FAT32.
You can just read from a HD that was formatted under NTFS.
So basically if you need to just get data off the drive and onto the MAC, you shouldn't have any problem. I would then format the drive as a FAT32 (windows) or the Mac filesystem to get the files back on the drive. Stick to FAT32 if you want to use that drive with a PC again. The only problem with FAT32 is that you cannot have an individual file be more than 4GB. If you're dealing with pictures and music, that should not be an issue.
You would be able to have 2 partitions.
