How come I can only 'read' when I inserted my portable hd to mac from Windows pc?
I can copy files from Windows PC but not on my Mac. When it is inserted to Mac, it says it could not be modified. The portable drive supposedly support both Mac and Windows.
the reason is because windows machines use an outdated file format called NTFS, while macs use a file format called HFS+. natively, mac can only read NTFS, it cannot write to it. your hard drive is probably in NTFS
there is a third file format called FAT. both windows and mac fully support it, its what is usually used with flash drives. you should copy all of the files off of the hard drive, and then format it through either your windows machine or your mac, and then put all of the files back on it. alternatively you can get a program that allows mac to write to NTFS. there are plenty of them out there.
