Run EXISTING Windows XP MCE install INSIDE Linux WITHOUT Dual-Booting?
Hello,
I have Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) and Xandros Linux (OC 3.0.1) on the same Dell PC (Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM). Dual Boot is set up (I think Xandros uses LILO for this), but switching between Linux & Windows is too slow. I hate having to reboot each time. I know I can set up a brand-new Windows Guest OS inside Linux using e.g. VMWare -- if I have a Windows Install CD. But can I not just "virtualize" or reuse my existing Windows install that's already on the same machine as the Linux?
This would save lots of hassle, including reinstalling applications and moving over data.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Thanks for your answer, Taztug. I wonder if you could run the virtualization utility on another PC that is networked to the Windows installation that you are trying to virtualize.
To "virtualize" the existing installation you would need to be able to create the virtual machine while the OS is running so that all settings are properly recreated. Unfortunately, you can't virtualize a system on itself. Otherwise you could create the virtual image and then using the same software for the Linux side you could then start the virtualized system.
Unless the virtualization software has changed recently I am afraid you are stuck with either the dual boot or the re-installation. You can try to create the virtual image of the Windows side while it is running and see if it lets you. If it does then you simply need the same software on the LINUX side to start the virtual image.
YES. I have done this with Servers. Works just fine.
