What would be better for performance, with windows xp pro, a dual-core 3.1 ghz or a quad-core of 2.4 ghz?

I would suggest the dual core if you run less processes at once as it will be able to focus more on the program you are running.
Go for the quad core if you are planning on high spec video editing or high cpu usage multi tasking.
