How good is a Pentium D (2.8GHz) with only 256MB RAM?
I really would like to know the minimum RAM requirements for using a Pentium D with 2.8GHz.
A friend of mine uses it with only 256MB RAM, and i'm trying hard to convince him that it wont be that capable of multi-tasking. How wrong am I in my argument?
That PC is required to support Windows XP, MS Office Applications, Internet Browsing and an anti virus to run in the background.
A processor doesn't need ram. It has its own memory.
What you aim to explain is the concept of a bottleneck. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. A pipe is only as fat as its bottleneck.
In this case, its the ram. Tell your friend, next time he's at his computer for a few hours, to pay attention when it suddenly gets real slow. He'll hear the hard drive working non-stop, the hd light on the computer will do the same. Thats when the ram runs out and your hard drive starts acting as your extra ram. The hard drive is hundreds if not thousands of times slower than the ram, and now its the new bottleneck. Doesnt matter what processor you have then.
256 is far too little ram. An internet browser can eat up half of that, easily. A gig is bare minimum, and memory is cheap now.
