why i my pc can use 2gb ram when i have 4gb installed?
i have windows 7 32 bit. i just installed additional 2gb ram but when i checked the details of my pc, it says 4gb(2gb usable). do i have to use 64 windows to fix this?
The problem could have multiple solutions: (The first solution is probably what's wrong)
First of all, make your RAM is firmly in the RAM slot. Also, make sure the RAM is the same as the slot or motherboard specifies (DDR,DDR2,DDR3, etc). Check to see if your RAM meets the rest of specifications listed on your RAM box. (If you don't have the box/instruction manual, go online and look up the brand and type. You may be able to find it.)
If this doesn't work, continue:
1. The most likely solution is you have a 32-bit operating system, which does not support as much RAM as a 64-bit operating system. You could buy a 64-bit operating on newegg.com. Just search for Windows 7 64-bit (You can choose from Home Edition, Professional, or Ultimate). Now you should be able to utilize your RAM. NOTE: Buying is a last resort, since an OS costs a lot these days. Make sure this is the problem before continuing.

If this solution does not work, continue to step 2. NOTE: Troubleshooting can be a pain, so be prepared to encounter time consuming periods of installing/fixing/buying hardware.
2. The other solution(s) could be a (or many) hardware failures. It is most likely not your motherboard, as your other two slots work, or other one (depending on your setup. I assume you have 4 slots, 1gb sticks. You could have two 2gb sticks and two slots). Anyway, long story short, your RAM is bad, or you didn't push the RAM stick(s) far enough down. This could cause your computer not to recognize the RAM.
