fit for basic tasks only. the vendor said this setup could not run 3d games. that's ok.

Your vendor lied to you, you can play 3d games with that computer.
If you want to increase game performance, either get a better video card or go up to 2gb of memory.the 2gb of memory would probaly give you more bang for your buck.
Depending on how many ram slots your board has, now is the time to get more memory, if it has two slots, you will be getting two 500mb ddr modules. to upgrade later, you would have to buy two 1gb ddr modules and hope you could sell the two 500 mb modules.
