Comfortable Operating Temperature of an Intel P4 CPU?
Hi. I just wanted to know how hot an Intel P4 rev 2.0 CPU can get comfortably, i'm looking to overclock one but i don't wan't to burn it out. Degree's Celsius/Centegrade are preferable, thanks in advance
It should idle in the 30s with the stock heatsink and fan. When you get in the upper sixties is when you need to be concerned. If you're into gaming make sure you check the temp after about 5 mins cuz thats when the cpus gonna heat up the most. Also make sure you know where the J5 jumper on your motherboard is and how to use it to reset your cmos should you not be able to boot up due to a failed clock.
Althou overclocking a cpu will sometimes fry a cpu it rarely does because it will usually shut off when it gets too hot. What fries cpus is upping the voltage too much to overclock it because when you turn your rig on the excess voltage goes POOF and fries your cpu before the safety shutoff feature is even activated so the main thing is to be careful bumping the voltage up. I overclock everything and there is a sweet spot where your computer runs the best and its never at the highest clock you can get your cpu to but a combo of the cpu clock , your video cards clock and the latency on your ram. A good place to go is futuremark.com and download and install 3dmark2006 and run it and see how your rig performs at the various clocks. You can even compare your results to other puters and store them on the site with your notes of clock speeds etc and check your progress. You have to join to do that but its free and just needs your email address and a password. Doesn't work with vista thou, they have a new benchmark coming out soon for vista.
