I have a brand new P4 2.8Ghz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD system. Often CPU usage shoots to 100%and audio gets cranky?
I don't have any files in my hard disk, since I bought the system recently. While playing DVD or VCD, the audio is skipping and jarring and CPU usage shoots to 100%. I have NORTON internet security and it claims my system to be free from any worms or spywares.
Check what processes are running by pressing ctrl+alt+del
this way you should see all of the processes that are running
anything that you did not install, or are not currently using, delete to free up memory
please notice though, that the computer has its own process names that you may not be familiar with
ps. for me, playing dvds takes a lot of space
