Theoretically, it is possible to run an internet marketing business without using your own personal computer. However, it's not the most efficient thing to do, considering that internet marketing as a business requires plenty of focus during its initial stages and during promotion periods. Having your own computer is not only practical, it also gives you much more flexibility. If you're a newbie and unfamiliar with the nuances in computer buying, here's how to navigate your way in the sometimes confusing world of computers and find the right one for your internet marketing business:
Desktop or laptop?
A desktop, hands-down, still offers far more computing power than a laptop. If you need lots of power, a desktop computer is a good choice. However, if you prefer more flexibility and portability, a laptop is for you. This is also a good choice if you will be traveling a lot. Laptops are also quite powerful these days but you're usually stuck with what you have, unless you obtain software or hardware to supplement certain functions. With laptops, however, it's easier to replace components if you need to upgrade or simply want a change.
Ask what you expect your computer to do for you.
A computer is more than just a gadget - it's a business tool. Majority of what you will be doing as an internet marketer, even if you're still a newbie, will involve the use of a computer. In fact, your business will depend on it. So before you can find the right computer, decide what you will need it for and what types of tasks you will be doing with it.
For example, as an internet marketing newbie, you will need a computer to write copy, connect to the Internet, send messages, probably design promotional materials or handle graphics. You might also want your computer to be capable of handling certain applications, software, widgets, etc. Make a list of what you need so you can make a better decision later.
Processor power and capability
The computer's power is generally determined by its processor. Generally, the more capacity and speed the processor has, the better its performance. The computer's clock speed determines the rate of information processing it is capable of, measured in GHz for newer models and MHz for older ones. The speed is also affected by the cache memory, where information and instructions are executed, accessed or stored.
There are plenty of very powerful computers out in the market but you don't need the fastest and meanest for your internet marketing business at all. Memory

This is the minimum at which you can efficiently run newer applications. You could just buy more memory later. But if you don't want the hassle of upgrading, start with a 1GB, which should give you enough room for growing and expanding your internet marketing business.
Storage
A roomy hard drive should be able to handle all your memory and computing needs. If you're trying to cut on cost, find a computer with at least 40GB or go higher and look for an 80GB hard drive. That way, you're not about to lose memory anytime soon.
Although you might want to make use of your hard disk drive for file storage, you might also want to transfer your data for much-needed backup. For this, you'll need a rewritable CD or DVD drive for making copies on discs. Old but still reliable, a 3" 1.44MB floppy drive may still come in handy and will be an important tool later.
Internet connection
A computer for use in internet marketing should have a modem (built-in or external) and the appropriate software for access.
Note also if the package price lists a monitor. Some retailers do not include a monitor which might account for the affordable price. Good monitors can cost from $300 to about $500, which can add to the cost of your equipment if it comes separate.
Warranty
Do not overlook warranty. Check whether the manufacturer covers the hardware, software, parts and labor. Look for a computer that has a minimum of one year warranty. Any less should be suspect.
Does brand matter?
You could solve your problem quite easily and find the right computer for your internet marketing needs by zeroing in on a particular brand. Some top brands include Acer, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Compaq, Dell and Toshiba. Read online reviews written by professionals and users themselves to help guide you on your choice.
Budget
If you want to find the right computer for your internet marketing needs, you will usually get the kind of quality you're willing to pay for. Of course, there are computer manufacturers that offer quality at a cheaper price and if you want to choose their products, make sure you understand what it is you're buying. Get some expert opinion to help you make your decision or read professional reviews first.
However, if you must spend, make sure you buy as much computer as your wallet can afford. If you've done your research, you'll find that quality often means cost.
