My system hangs or restarts

I was having 3.0GHz Intel P4 processor,512Mb RAM, 80GB HDD. I had added 1GB RAM more. Now my system total RAM is 1.49GB. After installing my system restarts or hangs...
Is it due 2 installing 1GB RAM...? How can I rectify it..?
Yes..remove that newly added ram..if computer works fine then remove the 512mb ram and add 1gb ram..if the computer is not responding or slow then,tht ram is faulty one..if not,you might not have dual channel configuration..its better if u have dual channel architecture.
