Dell Optiplex GX 270 is stuck at Windows XP loading screen?
My school has several Dell Optiplex GX 270s running Windows XP Proffessional SP2. Recently, several of them have been failing to boot. They get to the black Windows XP loading screen, but they dont continue. They remain on this screen indefinitely. All components are connected and working properly. If anyone can help me fix this problem please answer.
I support close to 1000 desktops/laptops, all Dell. The 270 models we purchased probably number close to 800. Sounds like a bad boot sector. Sounds like they are getting past the POST screen and trying to go into windows.
In order to repair, insert the XP CD that came with comp, set the bios to boot to CD, run the setup. Try to do a fast repair. If not, do a repair via command line c: prompt. At c: prompt just type in "fixboot" without the quotes. Then restart computer.
Also, when the computer is posting, before it gets to the XP screen, hit the Ctrl-Alt-D buttons (not Delete but "D") and you should hear a single beep. This will run a diagnostics on the HD. You can also run some diagnostics on the RAM and other portions of the system by pressing F12 at POST and selecting the Utility partition in the menu. Possible your harddrive is tanking or the RAM. These tests are not definitive but are a good starting point.
P.S. There is an issue with the mainboards in those computers. Dell had to come out and replace every mainboard on all 270's due to this issue. Our problem was a blinking amber power light and no boot or post. Don't think this is your problem tho.
