Optiplex Gx520 Xp
Computer Video, Processor, Ram.?
I have Dell Optiplex GX520. Got it in 2002. I can buy a new computer. But I dislike Vista. My question was would it be possible for me to upgrade my video card. To a higher one such as a Nvidia? I've wanted to upgrade my processor, but not sure if its possible. The reasons for that is so I can watch quality movies and to be able to play pc games.

Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.66GHz 2.66GHz, 1.99 GB of Ram
and my video card is
Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family.
From what I gather, and gathering is hard for as long a running model as the GX520, you have some sort of Intel 945 chipset. This basically means you may be able to use a Core 2 Duo processor, but not nessesarily. What you should be able to use, without doubt, is an Intel Pentium D processor. These are essentially dual core 64-bit pentium 4 based cpu's. They are no where near as powerful as Core 2 Duo's, but they get the job done for mild gaming and recreational use. My base line build for gaming would be ANY dual core, decent video card. I think a Pentium D 806 off ebay is your best bet at absolute compatibility. If you can get me the exact chipset of board on your system (message me) I can be more specific about which CPU would be best.
As for the video card, I suggest you get something with low power usage and less heat production, so a newer mid range card, especially the Radeon HD 4670, would be a good choice. This version is reasonably price and comes with a nice cooler from a good brand:

It should play any modern game just fine, just don't expect to max everything made within the past few years.
THIS ASSUMES THAT YOU HAVE A PCI-Express X16 slot, which it looks like you do. Check and make sure first though, I recommend a visual inspection. Look for a slot with the same sort of configuration (may have different or no clip mechanism at the edge) as the blue and organge slots on this board (http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2007/1119/tawada117_3.jpg) It is possible that you have an AGP-8X slot. That looks like (http://www.techsoup.org/binaries/Files/motherboard_opt.jpg) that. If you have one of those, your best bet is to try and ebay a Radeon X1950pro agp.
