Installing Memory In Dell Optiplex GX-260 I get beeping sound.?
I have a Dell Optiplex GX-260 with 256mb RAM. I recently purchased a 1GB memory stick. When I installed the 1GB stick closed the computer plugged it in I got a high pitched beeping sound and computer wouldn't boot up and nothing appeard on the screen. I've tried it both ways the new 1GB stick with and without the old 256mb stick. If I put the 256mb stick back in alone everything works fine. Any ideas? Maybe I have a defective stick?
Either the 1GB stick is bad or it isn't compatible with your system. Whatever the problem is the beeping is telling you that it isn't recognizing your memory - it beeps about 1 time a second. You need to check the specs of your computer and then get the right memory for it. Run the config wizard at www.crucial.com and go from there. Crucial says it should be PC2700 for the Dell Optiplex GX-260 - 2 slots each can support up to 1GB for a total of 2GB. Hope this helps...
