UPGRADING MY DELL OPTIPLEX GX 270 PROCESSOR?
I have dell optiplex gx 270 tower.I want to upgrade its processor to its extreme limit. I have 2.0 ghz processor installed in it. What is the maximum available processor for my machine?
I have a few of these, and I don't know the answer for a certainty. It supports 400, 533, and 800Mhz FSB. I believe it will support a Intel Pentium 4 3.4Ghz 512kb L2 Cache, 800Mhz FSB Northwood processor.
(I don't know if it will support the Prescott line ... THE MOTHERBOARD WILL it's a question of whether Dell's BIOS - Basic Input Output Instructions for the board will properly recognize the Prescott line. I have an IBM thinkcentre with an i865 board and it will support Prescott up to 3.4Ghz - fastest the Socket 478 (same as in the Dell GX 270) can run.
But for most things Prescott's were actually slower than there older Northwood counterparts (save maybe Video editing and then not by much). You can find a nice 3.2ghz Northwood 800Mhz FSB 512kb L2 Cache processor for around $25 or less shipped from fleabay, or if you want to buy from a store. www.computergeeks.com has them for $25 + s/h.
Most people will tell you not to waste your money on a CPU for this system and instead spend it towards a retail box unit from Dell or HP etc. for about $300 you can buy ... ( or put together a MUCH faster system). On the other hand if your system handles most things and you just need more power for some video or websites than the jump to a 3.2 is a reasonable spendature given the hard economy and my belief in not needing to throw away what still works well.
