can anyone tell me how to replace a harddrive from my dell optiplex620?
i have a dell 3000 and a dell optiplex620,i want to switch the harddrives around because,the optiplex has a 40gb hdd,and the dimension3000 has a 80gb hdd,i want to switch them around because the dell optiplex have better performance,currently the dell optiplex is running on windows xp sp2(pro),and the dimension3000 is running on window xp sp2(home edition)will it be possible for me to swicth the hard drives around?And i notice the hardrive on the optiplex is very complicated,i would appreciate any help from somebody

Without looking at the 3000's specs, I would have to say off the top of my head no. The GX620 uses a SATA HD and it can not be used on a standard ATA EIDE channel. Basically, the IDE cable will not attach to the SATA interface. Think of the SATA as a USB sized connection while the IDE is more of a old Printer interface.
If the 3000 is a SATA based machine as well, then still I would say no. The GX620 uses a different processor. When XP is installed, it creates what is called the HAL.DLL in which it records the processor type it is on and optimizes itself to that processor. Unless they have the same processor, then it will BSoD on you on the first boot.
Even if all of the above works there is still yet a third obstacle in your path... Windows detects major changes like this. XP Pro is better at being able to move about but your Home edition will choke and need to be re-authorized as there has been a major change.
All in all, i would not suggest moving them around like you want to. It wuold be easier and cheaper to know what drive goes where and buy a second hard drive of the same type but larger and slave those into the systems to give more room.
