Optiplex 4gb Xp
64-bit computing? Future or now?
Currently I have a Dell Optiplex, which is a 64-bit computer that originally came with Vista, I then downgraded to XP, and have now upgraded to Windows 7.
All this time I've been using the 32-bit version of Windows, however now that I have the option between 32 or 64 (since Win7 comes with both DVDs), which should I go with? I have 4GB of ram.
I have tried the 64-bit version and some things do appear faster, HOWEVER I have also noticed some programs simply won't work (ie. The old free PikyBasket, Adobe Flash player).
Is going 64-bit now worth it or should I simply just wait a few more years (perhaps for Win8) when more programs will be designed for 64-bit.
Ryan indeed your question is quite good why aren't manuf putting more emphasis on 64 bit and OPTIMIZING 64 bit technology. Microsoft for instance in our view has been extremely lazy and till Vista SHIPPED THE 64 BIT VERSION AS A SEPARATE DVD, add to this the stupidity of some "experts" that kept saying 32 bit is fine and no wonder it is slowly going mainstream.
We found to the great credit of Microsoft that indeed Windows 7 support an amazing nb of 32 bit programs even much older one. It is a bit amazing that u have not found all the apps to go with your version of Windows.
It is ALWAYS a bit ridicullus to run 32 bit operating systems on 64 bit CPUs so yes give it a try and DO install the 64 bit version. You will definitely noticed a slight increase in speed and responsiveness just make sure you have the video card to support the ultra demanding but beautiful Aero interface. AS for the main memory Windows 7 will handlle 4 gig of ram the right way to maximize efficiency.
