Healthcare organizations, including private physician offices, public health agencies, specialty hospitals and medical research institutions receive/send large volumes of clinical and financial health information. However, the conventional methods of communicating and sharing patient health information are not effective, i.e. they compromise timely delivery of data and its privacy. This is combined with the problem of maintaining paper records that are overwhelming and expensive due to their sheer volume. The introduction of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is catered towards solving this issue along with speeding--up the entire patient care system, making it more, secure, precise and affordable. An integral application within EMR is the use of PDF files that contain scanned images of medical/financial patient information but dubbing EMRs as 'PDF files' only is a misconception.
What is PDF Healthcare?
It can be understood as a bridging medium that is at the core of electronic records information systems. PDF healthcare does not impose drastic changes in a facility's operational behavior or massive spending on acquiring new technologies. It has been outlined to co--exist within the existing organizational framework. It is aimed at making the exchange of health information faster and more comfortable.

PDF healthcare's BPG & IG put forth published specifications that are catered towards the needs of the industry. BPG & IG detail various aspects of the free, Portable Document Format or PDF (ISO 32000--1--2008) to help providers understand a better medium of capturing, recording and exchanging patient information. BPG & IG are useful in this transition from the analog delivery/storage mode towards digital records in the industry.
The Best Practices are not a benchmark that has to be understood as a guidance system directed towards improving electronic data storage/exchange. They are based upon the platform of a markup computer--supported language called XML. Through XML, any standardized patient information can be embedded into a PDF file for displaying the data. The data can be accessed by anyone who has downloaded the free, earlier or the latest version of Adobe Acrobat.
