Every time I play a video, my CPU gets loud?
Like many people, I enjoy going on Youtube and watching videos and whatnot.
However, my computer sounds like a tractor when I start watching and it continues for a about a minute after I finish watching. It sounds like when you are rebooting a computer, and some small motor inside is making loud noises. Another example: it's A LOT louder than an xbox 360. I find it difficult listening to the video, unless I put the volume really high or if I have headphones on. I find this irritating and I want to fix this!! >:(
Is there anything I could do to fix this?
My computer is pretty old, yet somewhat reliable. It's a Dell Optiplex GX520 (Windows xp)
I have a feeling it could be the fans... but is it curable?
Absolutely fixable, get a new heat sink, sounds like the bearings may have went out on it. here are some instructions on how to replace a heat-sink, and ensure your fan will run quieter in the future. The key is good thermal compound:
NOTE: Please purchase the following materials if you intend to replace your heat sink: Thermal Compound, I have always used Artic Silver 5(which you can buy on newegg), 90% Isopropyl Alcohol and Cotton balls from your local drug store, these will be used to replace the thermal interface between your new processor and heat sink later.
CAUTION: please observe the following precautions.
Power off the machine,
Ground your self to the PC chassis
Disconnect power
Do not smoke while cleaning components
Procedure:
1. Carefully remove the heat sink and accompanying 3 pin fan connector, once that is done you will notice cured thermal compound on the surface of the processor and old heatsink.
WARNING: Do not abort the installation before performing the cleaning procedure and applying thermal compound, the cured thermal compound now has air bubbles and discontinuities in the conductive material on it and will greatly reduce the thermal dissipation performance of the heatsink. Attempting to reinstall the old heat sink withought applying new thermal compound may result in damage to your motherboard, data from unstable machine conditions and to the processor!
NOTE: There may be a thermal pad on the new heatsink. I recommend removing that and using artic silver. If you dont have artic silver or something like it then DO NOT remove the thermal pad.
2. Taking the isopropyl alcohol and cotton balls clean the surface of the processor and new heat sink untill you find that the cottonballs run clean.
3. Apply thermal compound in the center of the processor, this should only take the amount of one to 2 grains of rice.
4. Apply the heat sink to the processor and rotate in a small circle to remove any air bubbles and spread the compound evenly over the surface of the die cover.
5. Secure the the heatsink in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
6. Connect the fan cable, reassemble your machine and enjoy!
Good thermal compound means that the overall efficiency of your cooling solution is increased which means that your fan has to do less work to achieve the same efficiency.
The reason your fan speed increases when watching video is that there is an increase in CPU demand which leads to a spike in calculations it has to do to render the video. All of those millions of tiny transistors on your CPU switch on and off very rapidly causing small amounts of electrons to flow(electricity) which generates heat when you add them all up into a complete chip. A thermal sensor on your processor or a thermistor on your fan tells the motherboard how hot it is and your motherboard supplies more current to the fan to make it spin faster to keep your processor cool. After awhile though the bearings get worn out from friction.
