Can I upgrade my Dell Optiplex GX520's power supply?
I do have a Mini-Tower, with Dell Intel Pentium 4, Windows 7 Ultimate and 1.25GB of RAM DDR2. I have upgraded my Graphics Card from an old NVidia Geforce 6200 PCI, which is pretty outdated (by a lot actually....), to a high-end NVidia Geforce GTS 250, a big leap. I'm not familiar with PCI-e slots as my old graphics card used a normal PCI slot. I have heard that my Optiplex Mini-Tower does have one, so I seem to be pretty happy about that. The problem is that I have the default power supply that came with the machine (A 250W that has served me well). I have read that I need atleast 450W, maybe 500W to run my new GTS 250. Would I be able to upgrade my power supply? I have seen these quite cheap on Amazon and Ebay and I'm wondering if my rather outdated system (which I will probably get round to upgrading further later) can support these new power supplies?
The pci-e slot in your system is an x1 slot, which is not really meant for video cards. Video cards usually use the x16 slot form factor, which is too wide for an x1 slot. As for the power supply, watch out for cheap ones. I got tired of replacing cheap ones that stopped working after not very long, even though they were rated for a lot more power than the old one. Antic, Corsair and PC Power & Cooling make good ones. It looks like your power supply might be an oddball one, however. Something just doesn't look right about, and Dell used to make some proprietary ones a while ago. They make great power supplies, I have been using them for several years now without a single problem. They are also quiet, as well.
