Is it hormones that cause hair loss in men and women? If so, which one is involved? Could it be more than one? You will find the answers to those questions and more in the article below.
An androgen is a male hormone. Androgens are commonly blamed for male and female pattern baldness. The diagnosis made by doctors is androgenic alopecia.
Androgens include testosterone and dihydrotestosterone or DHT. Studies have shown that some hair producing follicles are sensitive to DHT. It causes them to shrink. The sensitivity seems to be genetic. In people that have androgenic alopecia, only some of the follicles are sensitive, which is the cause of the "pattern".
Researchers feel that female alopecia or pattern baldness is more complicated than male pattern baldness. They believe that DHT plays a role, but that decreased estrogen production is also a factor.
Estrogen modulates the activity of DHT to a certain extent. It also plays a role in the skin's softness, which means that the scalp's softness could be affected by decreased estrogen production. A "harder" scalp may inhibit hair growth.
In addition to hormones that cause hair loss, there are other factors to consider. Those factors are the same as the ones that cause wrinkles, sagging, age spots and outward signs of aging. They include inflammation, free radical damage and advanced glycation end-products or AGEs.
Chronic inflammation is a problem throughout the body. It plays a role in age-related heart diseases and cancer. Inflammation can be controlled with healthy diet and dietary supplements.
Free radical damage or oxidation is the primary cause of cellular aging. Research indicates that free radicals may be involved in alopecia. Since the area of hair loss becomes larger as a person ages, it makes sense that free radical damage is involved.
Insulin may be one of the hormones that cause hair loss. Foods with a high glycemic index cause increased insulin production. High insulin levels contribute to inflammation and can trigger the production of advanced glycation end-products or AGEs.
AGEs play a role in everything from Alzheimer's to wrinkles. So, it's a good idea to keep the production of those molecules to a minimum. You can do that by cutting back on foods with a high glycemic index. Mostly, they are simple carbohydrates like junk food and sugar.
Increased insulin levels result in lower levels of Sex-Hormone Binding Globulin or SHBG. SHBG may inhibit the production of hormones that cause hair loss, by binding to testosterone. Only free testosterone can be converted to DHT.
So, there are many factors that play a role in age-related alopecia, male pattern baldness, wrinkles and cellular aging. You can either make an effort to address all of those factors or address only one or two of them. If you want the best results, you will try and address all of them, but at the very least, you will want to address the issue of DHT.
