I want to set up a wireless network with a windows XP desktop and a (Linux and Windows Vista Home) laptop?
Do I need a special type of router for this?
Also, will my desktop have to be on for the wireless on my laptop to work?
Also, I use DSL.
How would I set up my wireless network router with my modem?
You will need a wireless router. This wireless router will connect to your modem with an ethernet (LAN) cable/wire.
Your desktop does not need to be on (once the wireless is configured the first time) for your wireless to work, but your modem and router must be left on for the wireless to work.
Instructions for the set up will come with the router. It is relatively simple IF you take your time and do it one step at a time.
