I have an old acer desktop w/a Pentium II processor. How hard is it to install a newer Pentium processor? ?
I have already added more memory and installed an ethernet pci card and a cd burner, but I have no idea how to install a new processor.
You can't and it wouldn't be worth the cost...
Pentium II computers used a completely different socket type than the current processors, so it is not even possible to fit the current generation of processors into the motherboard of a Pentium II computer (the Pentium II used the Slot 1 connector, the current Pentiums use the LGA 775 socket). Even if you could physically fit it, the firmware and chipset on that old Pentium II motherboard wouldn't support the newer processor.
The only thing you could do would be to entirely replace the motherboard in that computer... and once you go that far, it wouldn't be worth it to saddle the new motherboard with all the legacy hardware that is in your old computer. For example, the memory on that old Pentium II would not work on the new motherboard... so you'd have to throw it away and buy new memory. Odds are you have an older graphics card; your new motherboard would want a PCI-Express card.
By the time you finished replacing everything in the old computer, you'd pretty much have a brand new PC... and if you're going to go that far, it makes more sense to just buy a brand-new computer will all new equipment inside. It'll probably cost less in the long run and will run MUCH better.
So, unfortunately, you're kinda stuck with the processor you have. Any modifications on that end aren't worth your time or the effort for a PC that is so old inside.
By the way... the Pentium II processor ended its run in 1999, so you are currently using a PC that is, at a minimum, 10 years old. If you save up and upgrade to a new computer, even a modest one, you will be AMAZED at just how much faster the new equipment is... a full replacement will be well worth it to you!
