Does a Core 2 Duo make things faster in this specific case?
I was trying to remove 100's of unwanted entires found in the windows registry using AVG.
My system was so slow performing the task
RAM Usage: 26%
CPU Usage: 6% to 17%
RAM: 2 GB @ 667 MHz. Corsair.
CPU: Pentium 4 - 631. 3 GHz. With HT.
I was wondering, even though there is 74% of RAm that can be used, 83% of CPU that can be used, why does the computer use only a part of the resources.
Is there any use if I upgrade to a Core 2 Duo or Quad. Not that I am going to, but wanted to know the theory.

Hard disks: 2 of them. Both are SAMSUNG SATA 7200 RPM
PSU: Cooler Master 600W
GPU: Nvidia 7300 GS
Mother Borad: Intel 945 GCNL

My System load was found using the software "CPU and RAM Meter".... its has been consistently good
Most likely its the program and the task its performing that causes the CPU to not run at its maximum potential.
Think of it this way, The Registry is the database of windows that stores all the settings, program to file extension associations, etc. Windows will constantly be looking up stuff in the registry.
Now if windows allowed multiple program to access the registry at once, you could get 2 programs reading/writing the same key, which would cause many many issues. Thus, as with most databases, it locks records, etc to prevent errors being caused by simultaneous access.
This is the limiting factor. Simply put, AVG does not get enough access to the registry to use all of your CPU. There is really nothing you can do about it. Its just how it works!
Of course, if your system is running generally slow, then once you speed it up (by defragmenting the HDD's, cleaning out useless programs, etc) AVG should perform somewhat faster as there will be less other things accessing the memory (or HDD depending on what your getting AVG to do)
a newer CPU such a core 2 Duo or Quad will help only if your CPU is being puched to its limit, and the dual/quad core will only help when running multiple applications or running an application that has be programmed correctly to use multiple threads simultaneously accross multiple cores.
