installing DDR2 RAM chips in a HP xw4600 workstation?
I have not added RAM to any machine before.
Went through the guides

I have already backed up the machines data in case anything
goes wrong.
Anything in particular I need to be careful/aware of?

The SmartComputing guide is pretty thorough on how to add RAM. You won't have any problems installing if you follow their instructions. Do not ignore the warnings about static electricity - always touch the metal case before touching any components or the memory slot.
That's a fairly unusual PC you're upgrading. It uses ECC (Error Correcting Memory) which isn't the standard type used in the vast majority of consumer PCs. If you can see the chips on the memory card, there will be 9 chips on an ECC module side, as opposed to the usual 8.
Your most difficult task is getting the right type of memory. That computer needs memory installed in pairs. If you have the standard XP (32-bit), your system won't access more than about 3.25 GB of RAM no matter how much you install.
